Did you hear about the fellow who got into a tussle at Kroger’s over toilet paper?
He went in for butt wipe and came out with his butt whipped.
Thanks to my holistic veterinary consultant for the above quip. She supplements more than my older lab’s joints. 😊
Silly sarcasm may seem taboo during these difficult days. It isn’t.
Can we halt COVID-19, dissipate the fear, prop up the financial slide and break down the isolation? Nope. We can’t even be sure that all our precautionary measures will keep us from contracting the virus.
But there are a few things each of us CAN do.
Be grateful. Be kind. Be compassionate — to others and to ourselves. And laugh.
Years ago, many people faithfully followed Reader’s Digestmagazine’s “Laughter is the Best Medicine.” The editors continue this legacy with a website that contains the really complex tab, “Jokes.” Regardless of the title, it is scientific fact that tickling our funny bone is good for our mental and physical health.
Numerous research studies demonstrate that a good “tee hee” releases endorphins, enhancing our sense of well-being and even improving our tolerance for pain. A goofy guffaw can also act as a social bond, creating a collective mosh pit that elevates the moods of large groups of people.
Maybe you don’t find life very amusing at the moment. That is understandable. We seem to be drowning in a sea of scary, sad and sobering social and traditional media. We may live on high alert, patrolling an immuno-comprised person we love, frantically trying to ward off viral intruders.
But trust me, even now, Jim Gaffigan’s bit on Hot Pockets will double you over. Ellen DeGeneres’ tales of a male tabby disguised as a cable guy to pursue her female cat in heat bring tears. Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder’s Stir Crazy is still “bad,” forty years after its release.
The CDC and WHO will tutor you on handwashing, sanitizing and social distancing. My tiny goal is to remind you to laugh. Expect more of these blogs (if you want to receive them of course). I can’t promise when or how because it depends on inspiration.
You will find reasons to smile if you take the time to look. Meanwhile, what do you call four bullfighters in quicksand?
Quattro sinko.
