Things that Make Me Smile

They consist of rubber and felt, are usually bright yellow in color and about as big as your fist. They can be extremely frustrating and unbelievably satisfying all in the same five minutes.

They sometimes make me sneeze, but more often they make me smile.

Tennis balls. Why do I adore those little projectiles?

Because I …
— get a happy zing when one flies into the exact part of the court I intended for it.
— laugh like a hyena when I hit corner to corner and my boyfriend runs back and forth (He’s a good sport and humors me).
— associate them with warm weather and sunshine.
— have enjoyed playing catch with many of my dogs over the years who thought these soft-on-the-mouth balls were the bomb-dot-com.

Tennis balls constitute little multi-purposes eggs of happiness. One website claims you can reuse them to clean pools and those hard-to-reach corner cobwebs, protect floors from walkers that could scratch the finish, fluff your laundry in the dryer, repel bugs (coat them with Vaseline) or put them to work as lanterns, comfy chairs (?) and laptop holders.

Who knew? I just love them because they represent a slew of happy memories and the promise of more fun tomorrow. There was a dark time in my life when I thought a surgery would keep me from tennis court permanently. Imagine my joy when I started slicing and top-spinning that lovely yellow orb again.

That’s why they make me smile every day.
